Midwifery

Our Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner (WHNP), Amber Lavin, specializes in providing patient-centered, holistic, evidence-based obstetric and women’s health care, individualized for her patients and their families.

Amber earned her Doctor of Nursing from the University of Utah. As a CNM and WHNP, she can practice independently, prescribe medication, perform deliveries, and provide postpartum care and the full scope of gynecologic care. Amber enjoys seeing women of all ages, preteens through menopause, and loves collaborating with her Labor & Delivery nurses, OB/GYN, and family practice colleagues.

While Amber loves all aspects of midwifery, she loves helping babies enter this world. A hallmark of midwifery care is establishing relationships throughout the pregnancy and providing bedside support throughout labor.

“Labor is truly a team effort in terms of supporting the mother. We work hard to help women have the best birthing experience possible. We are fortunate to have a cohesive and multifaceted team at the Birthing Center. If something complicates the prenatal course, labor, or the postpartum period, our medical team can quickly grow to include an OB/GYN, MFM, lactation, and counselors.”

Midwifery services include:

  • Shared decision-making, supportive and holistic birthing experience, aligned with your decisions, labor plan, birth, and breastfeeding goals (including epidurals!)
  • If there is a complication or need for a surgical birth (C-section), we have access to 24/7 backup from our team of obstetricians and the CNM will first assist during surgery
  • Midwifery support throughout your labor
  • Freedom to move, including laboring in the tub
  • Eating and drinking in labor
  • Intermittent fetal monitoring
  • The ability to birth in a variety of positions
  • Delayed cord clamping
  • Immediate skin-to-skin for the first hour after birth
  • Delayed baths for babies
  • Breastfeeding support with our Lactation Specialist who is there for you during and after your stay with us.
